The currency in China is the Chinese yuan ¥ (CYN), also known as the renminbi. One yuan is subdivided into 10 jiao.

Chinese banknotes are available in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 yuan, as well as 1, 2, and 5 jiao.

However, the 2 yuan note and the jiao notes are rarely used.

Coins in China you commonly come across are: 1 yuan, 1 jiao (0.1 yuan), and 5 jiao (0.5 yuan).

Be aware that their is multiple variations of coins in circulation, such as both a small and large version of the 1 yuan coin and the 5 jiao coin comes in both gold and silver.
