How long do car batteries last?

Car batteries typically last between 3 to 5 years, but can last as long as 10 years in some cases. This lifespan can vary greatly based on battery quality and usage.

Several factors that influence how long a car battery lasts include:

  • Temperature: Batteries in milder stable climates tend to last longer as extreme temperatures accelerate internal corrosion and wear
  • Usage habits: frequent short trips that don't fully recharge the battery or draining the battery down to 0% can significantly increase wear
  • Maintenance: Certain battery types such as 'Flooded Lead-Acid' need to be regularly topped up with distilled water to prevent premature wear and for best performance.
  • Battery Quality: Heavy duty batteries from a reputable brand may last longer than cheaper models due to improved construction techniques, newer chemistry technology and thicker lead plates.
  • Vibrations & Shock: Constant vibrations or exposure to a large shock such as hitting a pothole can damage the internals of the batteries. Always ensure it is securely fastened within the battery tray and not bouncing around secured only with it's terminal connectors.

It’s important to keep an eye on battery performance as it ages, especially as it approaches the end of this range, to avoid unexpected issues!
