Genuine vs. Aftermarket Remanufactured Toners and Inks

When choosing printer cartridges, there are three main types to consider: genuine (OEM), remanufactured, and aftermarket (compatible) cartridges.

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)
Genuine cartridges are made by the printer’s manufacturer and sold at major retail outlets

  • Made by the original printer manufacturer.
  • Guaranteed to work seamlessly with the printer.
  • Best print quality and reliability
  • Will not void printer warranty
  • Higher (sometimes eye watering) prices compared to alternatives.

Remanufactured
Remanufactured are recycled original cartridges and toners that have been returned, cleaned, refilled, and tested.

  • Environmentally friendly
  • Lower cost than OEM
  • Quality and reliability may vary
  • Generally seen as less than original, but better the compatible

Compatible
Aftermarket or compatible cartridges are third-party alternatives designed for specific printers.

  • Produced by third-party manufacturers
  • Lower cost than OEM
  • Print quality can be similar to OEM but may vary
  • May not get the same number of prints
  • Potential for compatibility issues (chips, fitment, noise)

Each type has its pros and cons, so your choice depends on your budget, print quality needs, and environmental considerations. If buying remanufactured or aftermarket toners you should read reviews and choose a vendor with a good return policy
