"WC," an abbreviation for "Water Closet," originated in England during the 19th century. As indoor plumbing became more common, "water closet" referred to small, enclosed spaces where flushing toilets were installed, primarily within the home. These early toilets needed a water supply, which distinguished them from other types of toilets or outhouses at the time, thus the term “water closet” was coined.
Today, "WC" remains widely used as shorthand for a restroom, especially in European and some Asian countries, even though the setup has evolved significantly. The term is less common in American English, where "bathroom" or "restroom" is more common used.
The abbreviation remains globally recognizable, however, especially in public signage, and reflects both historical origins and practical function.
