Why is the sky blue?

The sky appears blue because sunlight, which contains all colors, is scattered as it passes through the Earth's atmosphere. Shorter wavelengths, like blue, scatter more effectively when they hit gas molecules in the air. This scattering of blue light in all directions makes the sky appear blue.
