Why are my brakes squealing and squeaking?

If your brakes are squealing or squeaking, there could be several reasons for the noise. Some causes are minor, but others may require immediate attention.

  • Squealing brakes are often caused by worn brake pads. Brake pads often have a metal indicator that squeaks when they need replacing.
  • Moisture or surface rust on the rotors, especially after rain, can also cause a temporary squeak that usually goes away after a few uses.
  • Dust or debris trapped between the pads and rotors can create noise and may need to be cleaned off.
  • Hard braking or braking downhill can cause the brake pads to overheat and glaze, which leads to squeaking.
  • Some brands of higher performance sintered brake pads can naturally make noise due to the material they’re made from, especially if cold.
  • Drum brakes might squeal if they aren’t properly lubricated and maintained

If the squeaking noise continues or turns into a grinding sound, it's important to consult a mechanic right away to avoid further damage. Persistent noise could signal a serious problem with your brakes and be a safety issue.
